Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University Bareilly was established in 1975 as an affiliating University. Its status was upgraded to an affiliating-cum-residential university in 1985 when four teaching Departments were established on the campus. In 1987 three more Departments were added. In August 1997 Rohilkhand University was renamed as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University. The University has taken an overall perspective of the development plan and thereby modified University status by including new Faculties of Engineering and Technology, Management, Applied Sciences, Education and Allied Sciences etc.
In tune with the goals of the University the different departments of the campus have framed their objectives for keeping pace with the national and international educational scenario.
The university has taken an overall perspective of the development plan. The university headquarters is in Bareilly. The territorial jurisdiction extending over the districts of Bareilly, Moradabad, Sambhal, Rampur, Bijnore, Amroha, Budaun, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur.The administrative block is on the outskirts of Bareilly city along Pilibhit bypass road. Bareilly College, ((Nehru Memorial Shiv Narayan Dass College, Budaun)) Hindu Degree College, Moradabad, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Post Graduate College, Government Degree College Sambhal, Bahjoi Mahavidyalaya, Bahjoi and S.M. Degree College Chandausi are some famous colleges of the university.
